Salmonella suggested as a factor in egg recall

Salmonella implicated in egg recall

For the 2nd time this year, an egg recall has been ordered. An Ohio egg farm is suggested as a factor in this recall. Cal-Maine foods ordered the recall after the FDA informed them that eggs from the Ohio Fresh Eggs farm had tested positive for salmonella. Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg both provided eggs from the egg recall earlier in 2010. Ohio Fresh Egg is partially owned by the same person that has a stake in those two farms.

Recalling 288,000 eggs in egg recall

The eggs recalled by Cal-Maine foods, the largest egg distributor within the US, were sold in eight states. The states were listed. AR, CA, IL, IA, KS, MO, OK, and TX were all included. The eggs were sold under the brand names Springfield, Sun Valley, James Farm and Sunny Meadow. A full list of UPC codes involved within the egg recall can be found here. The egg recall hasn't had any illnesses linked to it.

Egg recall linked to “habitual violator”

There have been issues in the past for this farm. This is the farm that gives Cal-Maine its eggs. The Ohio Fresh Eggs farm shut down in December 2006. This took place because Austin "Jack" DeCoster invested $126 million to the farm and it was not reported. Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg had an egg recall earlier this year that made 1,600 people sick. DeCoster was part of that as well.

Salmonella reason for recalling eggs

In general, most eggs are not tainted with salmonella bacteria. In each 20,000 chicken eggs, 1 egg may have salmonella which equates to, per egg, five microorganisms. An egg with 100 microorganisms will make someone sick. That is the expected amount. It’s easy to avoid salmonella bacteria. Cook your eggs to 160 degrees. This will kill any bacteria there. You are able to also protect yourself by purchasing eggs from someone you know who treats their hens well. This is because hens that are in a dirty place that is overcrowded is more likely to get salmonella.
