Sarah Palin blood libel comments insensitive to shooting victims

Using the term "blood libel" to explain media judgments of her pseudo-violent political witticisms, Sarah Palin sought to claim a number of the interest encircling the Arizona shootings Wednesday. On a list of gaffes deemed "Palinisms" by common culture, blood libel can be added to a list that includes "refudiate" and "death panel." What blood libel really means is a lie told through Christians with the centuries about Jews seeking the blood of Christian children for their sacred observances. Palin is going to have to take out an enormous paydayloan to buy her foot out of her mouth if she isn't careful.

The blood libel Palinism

There is a reason why Sarah Palin came out with her blood libel speech. It is because the map of U.S. congressional districts that has democrats marked with gun sight crosshairs on it posted to her Facebook has gotten a lot of criticism. The map includes Democrat Gabrielle Giffords on there. After getting shot in the head on January 9 in Tucson, Giffords is recovering in the hospital right now. It seemed like Palin wasn't going to do anything but talk about herself during the speech. She referenced "Congress woman Giffords" who on the House floor had a "beautiful moment" while reading the First Amendment for a second though. Palin spoke last May about negative coverage an Idaho Republican congressional candidate was getting saying it was “a violation of the freedom of the press.” That is how much she knows about the First Amendment.

Definition of blood libel

The term blood libel turned up in a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Glenn Reynolds Monday criticizing liberals for linking the Arizona shooting to statements Palin made, such as “Don’t retreat. Reload.”. In truth, the term blood libel can be traced back to antiquity. The blood libel alleged that Jews sought human blood for Passover rituals and preferred the blood of Christian children. The history of blood libel said a boy would be kidnapped for this. This boy would be executed after a ton of torture.

The irony associated with Palin's blood libel speech

Former Republican governor of Alaska, Palin, chastised the "media pundits" while giving her speech “who should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the hatred and violence they purport to condemn.” If she weren’t so willfully ignorant, she could have learned that her criticism of hatred and violence included a theme that has been used for centuries to persecute Jews (see Holocaust). Palin didn't realize that Rep. Giffords is Jewish apparently as she is very Christian.
