Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger most recently signed a brand new CA marijuana bill into regulation. The bill isn’t a full legalization. It is only a mild decriminalization. It doesn’t make it legal, by any stretch, however it does change the nature of the offense of possession of certain amounts. The regulation changes possession of small amounts to only a small fine. Possession of small amounts was formerly a misdemeanor criminal offense, which warranted a court appearance. Source of article – California marijuana law doesn’t go far enough by Newystype.com.
Marijuana reform is supported by Schwarzenegger
Governor Schwarzenegger signed a recent bill, titled SB 1449. The penalty of carrying less than an ounce of marijuana around went down with SB 1449. Currently, it is a misdemeanor that demands a court appearance, and up to a $100 fine. However, as of Jan. 1, 2011, the new penalty can be only a fine, based on the Los Angeles Times. Proposition 19 is one more proposal being looked at where it would be lawful to use marijuana for recreational purposes. Governor Schwarzenegger only signed SB 1449 for practical reasons although is actually against Prop 19. Regulation enforcement and also the courts won’t have to deal with the burden as often. California has some of one of the most relaxed medical marijuana laws within the United States.
Inadequate proposal
The arguments concerning marijuana use and its relative “evils” are flawed. Marijuana is no more a gateway drug than tobacco or alcohol. Anyone that is determined to use drugs will use them anyway, regardless of whether that person first uses marijuana. Furthermore, the history behind the criminalization of marijuana makes the illegality of the drug philosophically suspect to start with. One of the reasons Nixon launched the “Drug War” was to give law enforcement greater powers to crack down on political dissenters.
Not any benefits
The law will not stop individuals from doing what they want, claims history. Crime happened mostly because alcohol was prohibited within the early 20th century. Weed being illegal does the very same thing. The police end up having more to do. Everyone who testifies to that probably lived with the K.G.B. or the Stasi looking over their shoulder consistently. Marijuana being illegal helps nobody.
