Sign language is an extremely helpful and efficient way to teach children how to communicate with people before their language skills become fully developed. It should not be used instead of speaking but as well as speaking. A child learns most effectively as an infant before the cells in the brain have been pruned off while not in use. Sign language is just another language. It helps children communicate their needs and desires. Sign language also helps boost an infant's thinking skills. There are many different pros and only one con that has really been explored with it. That seems like enough for me to use sign language with my children.
