Life as an addict cannot be broken down into two separate things: living life on the one hand, dealing with addiction on the other. From all that I understand, your addiction becomes your life. Recent medical studies indicate that many who become addicted to a substance, activity or behavior are in fact possessors of certain genetic markers which suggest that they are prone to addiction. Just one pay day of feeding the fire can lead to relapse and a battle with the inner demons.

The question becomes how should one deal with addiction? 12-step programs are popular, but without compulsive attendance and participation, the old addiction is not replaced with the new. That’s how it works. The vanguard of addiction study believe that addiction isn’t wiped away, but replaced with (hopefully) something more healthy. One such popular movement involves intense exercise that culminates in marathon running.
