Online sellers report big drops
After several months of sky-high airfare, airlines are now slashing rates to try to fill empty seats. Demand for travel has fallen steadily, and now ticket prices are falling with it.
Now, tickets for popular flights are at a 2-year low. They are 40 percent lower than when they peaked in June.
Fuel fluctuations
Though airlines would like to be able to raise their prices along with fuel prices, which are inching back up, consumers simply refuse to pay higher fares. So while fuel prices are still low, airlines won’t be able to profit much from what they’re saving in costs. But you’ll be able to get an airline ticket without having to spring for payday loans.
Big flights, little prices
People can now get round-trip tickets between San Francisco and Boston, New York or Washington for less than $250, down from $350 to $400 a year ago. International fares are down, too. Some round-trip tickets between New York City and Amsterdam, Madrid or Frankfurt have fallen to less than$400, from between $600 and $700 a year ago. Tickets between Chicago and Sydney can be found for less than $1,000, half of what it cost last year.
Price wars
